Canyon River Rača - Canyoning Adventure

River Rača canyon is on Tara mountain, on the territory of Bajina Bašta. It was formed by breaking Rača river through limestone rocks and at its end it empties into Drina river. The well-known Rača monastery from 13th century was named after this river.

The entrance to canyon is not far away from the abandoned military hotel in Šljivovica. We leave our vehicles there and put our neoprene suits on and take the necessary equipment. We go down the path to the Jarevac lake, where Rača river wells up. Soon we enter the forest part of the canyon which is abundant with old beech and pine trees and turned down trees often make the first obstacle in our adventure. Along the first kilometer of the canyon there is the first vertical ahead us and the narrowest part of the canyon as well. It’s high time we tested our abilities. After the first vertical Rača river disappears and it wells up again at the end of the canyon. All along the most difficult parts of the canyon we can see iron bolts, bars, cables dating from the period of the Kingdom od Serbia, the time when king’s army was trained in this canyon. They enable us passing through vertical obstacles almost without a rope, and we only use it as a mean of safeguarding.

River Rača canyon with its access is five kilometres long. We make a break at the end of the canyon, ie. Ladjevac spring, and we finish our adventure at Rača monastery which we can visit as well. Here, vehicles wait for us with dry clothes. This adventure last approximately 4-5h and this canyon is suitable for larger groups( 10+ ).
